Kidepo Valley National Park

Are you a tourist interested in visiting a remote destination that is greatly unexplored? Then visit Kidepo valley National Park, a remote Park nestled on the jagged semi-arid Valleys, in North-eastern Uganda on the border with South Sudan and Kenya. It was gazetted in 1962 hence the third Park to be gazetted in Uganda. Covering an area of 1442 square kilometers, Kidepo Valley National Park is the third largest Park in Uganda after Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

This Park boasts of the most spectacular landscapes in Uganda but in undeniably the most isolated National Park in the country. Tourists who endure this lengthy and tiring journey to this Park will totally agree that Kidepo Valley National Park is the most spectacular and was ranked as the third best destination in Africa by CNN. Visiting this Park is not an ordinary wildlife safari but it’s a safari to a true African Wilderness experience like no other experience. The savanna landscape expands from Apoka (the heart of the National Park), far beyond the gazetted area to the horizons demarcated by distant mountain ranges.

Because this area is a semi-arid region, the only permanent water during the dry season is noticed in wetland and remnant pools in the broad Narus Valley next to Apoka. These seasonal water holes/oases together with the open savanna terrain make this Narus a perfect and principle game viewing site within Kidepo Valley National Park.

What to See and Do in Kidepo Valley National Park

The vegetation of this Park is characterized by four ecosystems including the Savanna woodlands and the Narus Valley with grey-haired acacia (acacia gerrardi) among others. There are over 86 species of mammals, about 475 species of birds and more than 692 species of plants (second after Queen Elizabeth National Park) in this magnificent National Park. The interesting thing about visiting Kidepo Valley National Park is that over 28 of the mammals species cannot be sighted in any other National Park in Uganda. This is why you should not miss exploring this Park while for a safari in Uganda. Some of those wildlife species only unique to KVNP include Aardwolf, Striped Hyenas, African wild dogs, Greater and Lesser Kudu, Caracal, Cheetahs, Dik-dik, Beisa Oryx, Klipspringer, Bright’s gazelle and the Roan antelopes among others. Other wildlife species sheltered in this Park include African Elephants, Buffaloes, Giraffes, Zebras, Jackals, Lions, Jackson’s hartebeest, waterbucks and Lions among others. Of all the 475 species of birds, there are 58 recorded species of birds of prey and some of them include pygmy falcon, lammergeier and Egyptian vulture among others. There are also 14 species of raptors that are only unique and native to this Park and five species of hornbills are found in KVNP. This Park will never stop impressing tourists because even some of the world’s rarest and most desired species of birds are found here and they include Black-breasted barbet, Karamoja apalis and Ethiopian swallow. Other species you are likely to encounter include Red billed Oxpecker, Clapperton’s francolin, Hartlaud’s bustard, Ostriches (only found in this Park), and the Nubian woodpecker among others. Therefore some of the activities tourists participate in include game drives, birding nature walks, visit to Karamajong Village, and visit to the Ik people of Mount Morungule

Murchison Falls Uganda

Driving towards the northern side of Uganda via the Luweero triangle is Murchison falls, Uganda’s largest national park covering an area of about 3840 square kilometers and the home to almost all the big cats, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes among other animals. Located in the Albertine rift valley where the beautiful Bunyoro escarpment meets the doted savanna. Its Uganda’s oldest conservation area since it was first gazetted as a game reserve and later to a national park. Its home of over 76 species of mammals and over 451 bird species.

Areas of interest with in the park

Murchison Falls

These falls are comprised of a war between the rocks and water. The waters violently penetrate through a very narrow gorge spraying their droplets of about a 50metre radius. This creates a very nice looking rainbow over the battlefield. From the baker point on the southern side, you can also get glance at the Nile splitting into the small uhuru falls that was created in 1962 when the river burst its banks. At this point you just appreciate that nature is the only thing should not even be tampered with.

Paraa

The word paraa means “home of the hippo” in the Luo language and this is the parks hub. All the access roads of the park just converge here. Several accommodations are located here, a small museum and a gift shop is also located here and most game drives, nature walks and launch trips start or commence here. All along if you have been wondering where you can view all the hippos behavior, paraa is just the place to be at the Murchison falls national park.

Karuma falls

Located in Chobe the north eastern side of the park, these charming water falls of the Victoria Nile are made up of a series of rocks which cause the waters to ripple making them look in a foamy white appearance. It is really an ideal spot for sport fishing. For the honeymooners, oh my God, guess what awaits you, it is one of Africa’s most beautiful and spectacular lodges, The Chobe lodge. This is just a magnificent experience and you just can’t miss it.

Kaniyo pabidi forest

The great elephants and the leopards are also very frequent visitors to the forest including the beautiful birds like the chocolate backed kingfisher, white thorned horn bill and the puvel’silladopis that is found nowhere else in the whole of east Africa. The forest also has a campsite for camping, forest walks and good bird watching.

Rabongo forest

Surrounded by grasslands, the forest is a good place where most birders have their paradise, with the endangered species of birds. The visitors can also enjoy camp fires and relaxation on the banks of the Waringo river.

Buligi game tracks

Lying between the Albert and the Victoria Nile, it’s one of the Murchison’s popular safari destinations covering an area of about 120 to 170 km in length. The tracks try to pass though the savanna grassland, acacia and the river rine vegetation. Most of the parks wildlife can be viewed here most especially in the early morning and the early evening hours

River Nile

The meaning stills comes out that it’s the longest river on the planet because you can view its source in jinja but still find on its way to the Mediterranean at Murchison falls. The boat cruise along the river is the greatest experience for the nature lovers when they have a great view of the mammal, birds, reptiles and the guided nature walks.

However, unlike other parks, Murchison falls also has got some areas of attraction outside the park and they are also worthy to pay a visit to for example the Budongo forest that harbors almost 800 chimpanzees and a variety of beautiful birds. Forest walks are very possible at Busingiro Eco-tourism site on the Masindi-Bugungu route to Murchison falls national park. The olive baboon is also another attraction that are common along the road routes. Please make sure that your car windows are closed if you don’t want to loose your spicy lunch to these funny creatures. You will not also miss the savanna dwelling patas monkey is also found here.

Activities with in the park

The launch trip that starts at paara gives you an astonished and wonderful experience where you have to have a frontal view of the falls. The launch mainly departs at 9am and 2pm daily and takes three hours. And for the birders, the morning cruise downstream the Nile delta provides the best chance to view the African shoe bill and the return gives you a fantastic view of the hippos, elephants and the birds.

Sport fishing

On the banks of the Nile below the Murchison falls, a memorable experience of sport fishing is also awaiting you and you will get a chance to see the Nile perch that go as heavy as even 100kilogrammes. The fishing is permitted in the designated places and your required to book before and come with your own equipment and also secure a permit from the Uganda wildlife authority.

Chimpanzee tracking and habituation

At the kaniyo pabidi, you will also get chance to track theses close relatives of man. The track takes about 3 to 4 hours and it is limited to a group of visitors and takes about a period of one hour watching these chimps play, eat and interact. This is just also a memorable experience at the park.

Game drives

Tracking Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda

0
Mountain Gorilla in Rwanda

For the second time in life, I look forward being part of the Rwanda gorilla trek in the Volcanoes national park. This time it’s special for it marks the 2017 gorilla naming ceremony that takes place in Musanze district the beautiful land of Rwanda tourism and conservation treasures. Without these wonderful primates who become our friends in one hour of photography and observation, Rwanda would be very different and less vibrant than it now is.

In 2014 when I first visited Rwanda had a lot about the entire Rwanda gorilla tracking adventure and wanted to unveil the truth about the mountain gorillas and its general tracking experience and it found it worthy visiting again? One of the best gorilla habituated families to track in Rwanda is Susa with lovely impressive silverback and mother gorillas that make the encounter ground dramatic and interesting through out the one hour duration in the jungle. It was a very difficult decision to make since work and family where demanding but the adventure spirit and determination made it come to pass. It can look costly but the entire gorilla tracking experience is too exciting and overwhelming and it lives each day you think about Africa and its unique features.

If looking at amazing attractions and scenery, Rwanda does very well in every aspect ranking best not only as the great gorilla tracking destination but also one of the top eco-tourism destinations in Africa. Its daily conservation effort in natural attractions has given life to many beautiful living primates and wildlife and has impacted many other African countries to do the same. Therefore conservation is one of Rwanda’s crucial travel aspects and a concern of every tourist, traveler, government and the local community. They all have a responsibility of respecting natural attractions and support their well being.

The importance of conservation is evidenced in the neighboring countries of Rwanda that is Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, DR Congo, and many others. However, may the big thanks go to whoever supports natural conservation in one way or the other, since mountain gorillas are prime attractions of Rwanda and are the reason for Rwanda popularity across borders? Make it a point to track Rwanda mountain gorillas on your first time visit or even think of returning for the second trek as am about. It’s good to revisit the country for the second trek due to the great beauty the giant apes hold in the wild jungle.

Can’t wait to be part of the important Rwanda conservation event of naming young baby gorillas and exploring other Rwanda attractions that I missed on my first visit. I think it will be a great opportunity to discover more hidden gems across the country as we enjoy our stay. It’s good to visit a unique wonderful place for a holiday but Rwanda is truly one of those incredible places you shouldn’t miss out while in East Africa.

Well Kenya and Tanzania have the best wildlife viewing platforms but Rwanda has the finest primate viewing platform. It’s not bad to visit two or more countries across the region depending on your interest and budget as long as Rwanda is one of them. Is hiking you thing? Bisoke and Karisimbi are beautiful Rwanda volcanoes that need to be explored any time when you ready. Besides you can hike across to Mount Mgahinga in Uganda if well planned. Discus your interest with your trip planner at the time of booking so that nothing misses out during your stay. See you soon in Rwanda if you planning to be around in the same time as I will.

5 Reasons You Should Travel to Uganda

0
Gorilla Tourism

In the Africa tourism and travel industry, Uganda is not often considered among the top holiday destinations. The country is overshadowed by its more famous East African neighbors, Kenya and Tanzania, as well as South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia in the South. However, travel enthusiasts with better information know that a safari in Uganda is an experience incomparable to any you can have in other African countries.

If you have never considered traveling to Uganda before, read this post to discover why you should. Henry Morton Stanley and Sir Winston Churchill were not crazy to refer to Uganda as the pearl of Africa.

1. Gorilla trekking and other primates safaris

Have you ever watched the 1998 movie Mighty Joe Young? Or the Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011). Did you find them interesting? Of course, being movies, they have several exaggerations, but they well capture our (human’s) fascination with chimpanzees, gorillas, and other apes, considered our close relatives. What better way could there possibly be to satisfy this fascination, than tracking these primates in their natural habitat.

Gorilla trekking is without doubt the number one tourist attraction in Uganda. The country is home to one of the world’s largest population of mountain gorillas, the biggest of all apes. Every year, thousands of visitors travel to Uganda just to observe these mighty apes in their true home in the wild. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the most popular gorilla trekking destination in Uganda. Generally though, gorillas are also found in the Virunga mountains region, which transverses the Uganda, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo borders.

Be warned however, gorilla trekking is not an easy exercise. Most often, you will have to trek for two hours or more in dense forest terrain before sighting the first troop of gorillas. You therefore need to be healthy and reasonably fit to undertake this activity. The Uganda government restricts the numbers of people allowed to go tracking gorillas at any one time. As a result, gorilla trekking permits are in very high demand. To stand a good chance therefore, you should purchase your permit from a reputable tour operator at least three months before your intended date of travel.

You can find more information about mountain gorillas at the African Wildlife Guide website. Besides gorillas, other primates you can see in Uganda include chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, mangabeys, baboons, and many more monkey species.

2. Beautiful scenery and stunningly amazing landscape

In the book My African journey, Sir Winston Churchill describes Uganda as a scarcely describable beautiful garden. You may think that this has changed much since the time Churchill wrote that in 1908. But even today, Uganda still retains its amazing scenic beauty, one that very few other African countries can rival. Read this first hand experience of an independent traveler in Uganda if you think I’m bluffing.

Some of the beautiful places you must visit in Uganda include the spectacular Murchison falls, Lake Bunyonyi and its many tiny islands, Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria, the Kabale and Kisoro areas, the Kidepo valley national park in the Karamoja region, Mount Elgon near the Kenyan border, the snow-capped Rwenzori mountains – also known as the mountains of the moon, and Queen Elizabeth national park among others. Simply put, Uganda’s majestic rivers, green rolling mountains, and other natural features are the perfect setting for the most exhilarating scenic tours in Africa.

3. Spectacular African wildlife safari

You have probably heard of the tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara national park in Tanzania. But did you know that you can find the same in Uganda? The Ishasha plains of the Queen Elizabeth national park is the place to be to witness this.

In fact, you can see all of the big five African animals in Uganda. The Murchison Falls, Kidepo valley, and Queen Elizabeth national parks are among the best destinations for wildlife safaris in Uganda. They all have four of the big five, rhinos being the exception, plus an array of several other African animals. Like in other Africa destinations, leopards may be harder to spot in the wild because of their elusive and nocturnal nature.

There was a time when there were plenty of rhinos all over Uganda. However, the poaching menace, plus civil wars, led to their near extinction in the country. Today, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place you are assured of seeing rhinos in Uganda.

Of course, you cannot compare Uganda to Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, or South Africa when talking about wildlife safaris. But the country does offer a unique experience that you will not find elsewhere. You will find both the cape buffalo and the smaller forest buffalos, the savanna elephants and the smaller forest elephants, and hundreds of other animal species. You can also go on a chimpanzee tracking safari at the Kibale forest national park.

4. Great Opportunities for adventure sports and travel

The Nile, the longest river in Africa and in the world, has its source in Uganda. If you love extreme sports and adventure, the white Nile presents you some of the most exhilarating adventure opportunities. Popular adventure activities in Uganda include kayaking (from class II to class VI), white water rafting, and bungee jumping, all in the white Nile. You can also go sport fishing in Lake Victoria and at the foot of the Murchison Falls.

Owing to its hilly terrain, Uganda also has many excellent hiking and trekking trails, among them Mt. Elgon. You can even go mountain climbing in the snow-capped Ruwenzori mountains. Compared to the more famous Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Mt Kenya (Kenya), the mountains of the moon are less crowded with other tourists, yet they are just as challenging.

5. Rich African cultural heritage
Like several other African countries, Uganda has a very rich historical and cultural heritage. The most prominent destination for cultural travel in Uganda is the Kabaka trail.

The Kabaka is the king of the Baganda kingdom, a kingdom that dates back to the 14th century. The kingdom is still intact today, and its members practise some of the cultural and traditional rituals that have been passed down several generations. The Kabaka trail is that region in Uganda that preserves the history of the Baganda people. Some of the sites in this trail include the Naggalabi Buddo coronation site, Katereke royal prison, Ssezibwa falls, the Wamala tombs, and the popular tombs at Kasubi, the only UNESCO cultural world heritage site in Uganda.

East Africa Game Drive

There are three kinds of safaris from which any intending traveler ought to make a selection the kind he/she would like to take up depending on various circumstances.The choice is always for the traveler depending on his/her desires and or budget.Below are some of the points that determines one’s safari;

Many times a safari will be overpriced when there are too many hands involved, especially if you buy a safari package in your country of origin. There can be a marked difference between the prices of safaris and just because you are paying more, does not mean you are getting more for your money.

Transportation costs such as fuel, vehicle and English Speaking Driver. We use Safari type vehicles that have a pop-up roof for maximum viewing of wildlife and birding on game drives. Transportation Costs make up a large part of he safari, fuel being presently at around 1.5 USD a liter. There is a difference in price between a 4Wheel Drive Safari Van or a modified Toyota Land-Cruiser.

National Park, Wildlife Reserves, Ugandan Places of interest entrance fees, game drives, boat rides, ferry crossings, etc. They are the same no matter what price range you choose.

Your choice of what to do while in Uganda also affect the price of your safari. If you include Gorilla Tracking the price per person on Safari has just increased by US$700 and US$1500 for gorilla safaris in Rwanda. Chimpanzee Tracking is the next largest expense in parks ranging from US$50 to US$150 depending on where you will be tracking them plus park entrance of US$35 per day for foreigners and then there is the vehicle and driver.

Lodging and accommodations in Kampala and the National Parks come in three basic categories and in each one there is a certain cost range.

Luxury accommodation can range from US$500 per person per night to as high as US$5000 per person per night full board depending on the location, the type of accommodations available and so on. Luxury accommodations are available at most locations in or near National Parks and Wildlife Reserves.

Midrange or Moderate rates from about US$150 to US$400 per night per person and are available in most locations. The difference is the decor and furnishings in the rooms, the quality of food served. A bit more basic than luxury where dinner might be 4 or 5 courses served. Some moderate accommodations are just a few dollars below up-market in certain areas and the difference in quality is miles apart but we will certainly advise you.

Budget ranges from US$15 to 75 per day per person. It is usually very basic and not self contained in most cases. There are some areas where budget accommodations are not advised and we will make you aware of those places.

Full Board Arrangement is our standard, but in cases of budget safaris where meals have to be figured in, we simply do not do stripped down safaris that leave out important things such as food, bottled water.

Africa may be the poorest continent on earth – however that does not make it the lowest priced continent to visit unless you are bouncing on the back of some overland truck safari where what you get a good portion of our ever-red dust, feel like you have been on a roller coaster and it turns out not at all as you have envisioned it.

There are certain things that one is sure of by virtual of dealing with a competent and reliable tour operating company like us and below are the most striking ones;

-Quality Vehicle with pop-up roof for best wildlife viewing.

-Tour Guide Driver with over 5 years of experience and a safe driving record.

-You share the vehicle with only and only your entourage

-On Game Drives we add a Uganda Wildlife Authority Guide who knows where the wildlife is on that day and enhances your opportunities to see the most and well as furnishing you with first hand information about the park and all its habitats

-Normally budget facilities that have a good restaurant with nice meals and a variety of choices are picked

-There is always bottled water on board of vehicle for your consumption.

-The cost normally includes all permits and entrance fees – no fine print here or the words exclusive of.

-An itinerary is always provided to you detailing all the areas to be visited such that you are well acquainted with the flow of the journey.

-If you are going on 5 or longer day safari, you are given a mobile phone to use in order to stay in touch with your tour guide at all times, and the companies’ office and with your family as well.

Self Driving a 4×4 in Africa – Tips for Beginners

0
Self Drive in Kenya

Congratulations on taking the plunge and hiring a 4X4 for an awesome off-road African adventure!

As a newbie to the wonderful world of 4-wheel drive, you’ll fall into one of two camps – those who think they know it all already, and those who are totally terrified and have no idea how to handle ‘their’ Camel-man-mobile safely, let alone get the best out of it!

These tips are for you, whichever side you fall; never be too proud or too petrified to learn, for your sake and the sake of your passengers and fellow off-road track users.

Speed & Momentum

If you hit a spot of trouble DON’T accelerate – it can get you into a worse position. Slow down and take it easy – this helps you to keep traction and your tyres will work for you instead of spinning aimlessly.

When approaching an obstacle, you need momentum. The trick is to start a little way back to gain the momentum you need. This is a skill which you will master over time.

Limits

Don’t try new tricks when you’re out alone. Test your limits when you’re with more experienced drivers.

Mud

Use a stick to test a new mud hole for depth and softness. Remember a soft hole can prove impossible to escape! Enter the mud hole with a little momentum and if you feel that you’re getting stuck turn the wheel left to right to gain traction. Once you’ve gone as far forward as you can try reverse out.

Windows

Keep the windows up to avoid a mud shower or a face full of dust.

Stuck

If you are truly stuck, try letting a little air out of your tyres for better traction and when you get out of the ditch don’t forget to fill them up again.

Stalling

If you stall with your tailpipe under water, get towed out and pull the spark plugs before starting the engine again. A cylinder full of water can destroy an engine. When the plugs are out, however, the water will be safely ejected.

Obstacles

Go slowly over obstacles. Pull the hand brake a little for tension on the drive line to slow the vehicle and enable you to accelerate gently over.

Steering

Always hold the steering wheel with thumbs out when you’re off-road. If you hit a ditch or obstacle the wheel could spin too fast and hurt your thumbs. Keeping them out helps prevent injury. Keep your hands and arms inside the truck to avoid accidents.

Tools & Spares

Keep the following with you:

  • A hi-lift jack
  • Steel wire
  • Spare tyre and plug kit

Safety

  • Wear a safety belt
  • Don’t travel alone in unusual places
  • Have a cell phone on you
  • Don’t drink alcohol when driving
  • Get back on the tar road before dark
  • Give fellow 4X4 drivers on the track plenty of space
  • Don’t race or churn up the soil needlessly.

Respect

Respect the land, the other people using the trail and the vehicle! Douse campfires, don’t litter (this includes cigarette butts), stick to trails so as to avoid damaging the plant life.

Leave your ego at home and remember it’s about having fun!
